Dog Obedience Training

Why Train Your Puppy?

So you have or plan to get a new puppy?  No doubt you have prepared in some ways for when he or she comes home, the kids are ready to play, you have somewhere for your puppy to eat and somewhere they can sleep.  So what else is there to think of?  What about training?

While your puppy is little cute and cuddly they can do almost no wrong (except for the chewing of the kids homework and the accidental little puddles), but as they grow, any bad habits your puppy acquires during this period will remain.  This puts you in a difficult position when your dog is fully-grown and all of a sudden, goes off and does something you would rather he or she didn’t.

Training Your Puppy

There are five key techniques that your puppy will learn in obedience training or puppy school, they are:

Biting – Your little pup may currently affectionately nibble at your fingers.  Cute, right?  Well as a dog, it may not be, biting is a serious issue for dogs and could have terrible consequences if the dog bites someone else.  Training will ensure that your puppy knows that this behaviour is not acceptable.

Barking – Like biting, little yaps now are sweet, but a dog barking all day and night is likely not only to cause you headaches, but your neighbours as well.

Walking – Your strength places you at an advantage while your pet is small, but it could quite quickly become a problem as he or she gets older and stronger.  Imagine if your kids are not able to ever walk the dog without you there to help?  Obedience training will ensure you walk the dog and not have the dog walk you.

Understanding – People may think commands for dogs are not necessary, but really it is a way you and your dog can communicate.  Basic instructions like sit and stay can also be vitally important.  Imagine if your dog gets off his lead while walking?  It would be nice to know you could call them back to you without risking the safety of your dog or of anyone else.

Security – Dogs are a little like children, they need to know they are secure and loved, but they also need to know you are boss and it is their job to listen to you.  Security comes through having clear leadership, rules and boundaries.

Training your puppy at an early age in a dog obedience training school will provide you with all of these skills and more.  They are the skills to ensure your new pet will not only integrate well at home but ensure you can also be confident when he or she is around other people, especially children.

With these skills mastered you will have not only a well-behaved dog, but also one that will most likely be happier.

Training at Home

Training doesn’t end with the last lesson. The valuable skills your dog has learnt in obedience school will need to be reinforced at home.  Think of puppy training as puppy and owner training, as it is as much for you as it is for your puppy.  Take the family and get fully involved, so when you get home, everyone in your household knows just how to issue commands.

It will take time, but try to always remain calm and consistent while training or issuing a command.  Whenever you are going to use a command, say it clearly without additional words and when your dog responds in the way they should, ensure that you give them a reward, even if it is just an affectionate scratch behind the ear.
