The Proper Use of Shcok Collars for Dogs

Shock collars for dogs can be utilized as an excellent aid for training your dog. Used the correct way you and the dog will benefit. Used the wrong way and matters could get worse.

What is a shock collar for dogs? It is composed of a sending unit similar to your remote key less entry for your car. The dog wears a collar around his neck that provides a gentle electrical impulse through two electrical contacts. A receiver on the collar picks up the signal that you have transmitted and causes the electrical impulse.

A similar device controls barking by way of a microphone on the collar that senses the bark and delivers the impulse.  These “bark collars” work very well and will stop complaints from the neighbors almost immediately.

As far as the strength of the electrical impulse goes, it feels like the shock you receive when you walk across a wool carpet and then touch a metal water pipe. You’ll feel it but it not harmful. A safety feature limits the impulse to not more than 8-10 seconds regardless of how long the transmitter is activated. The intensity of the impulse can be set by the owner.

These collars can also be purchased with a sound tone or a vibrator option. In many cases the tone or vibration can replace the electrical impulse after training begins.   Two breeds that we have seen these collars used effectively on recently are Doberman puppies and American bulldog puppies.

Use the following technique to get the most out of the collar. Perhaps he is trying to dig under the back yard fence. Place the collar around his neck, set the impulse power to a low level, and give him a chance to go near the fence. At the first sign of digging activate the sending unit. This will get his attention and he will probably stop digging momentarily right away. Repeat each time he starts to dig.  Turn the power up on the collar if you need to. Changing you dog’s habits can be done with a little patience.

Here are basics of using shock collars for dogs effectively. Put the collar on and let him become accustomed to it before using for its intended purpose. Always start with lowest impulse power level in the beginning. Repeating the process is necessary but keep your sessions fairly brief. Once you start the program do not cease until the desired result is achieved. Intermittent use will not work.  Proper dog training can take months so be prepared for this commitment. Don’t forget to praise and encourage him when his behavior is improved.
