One of the best ways I’ve seen help with separation anxiety involves the simple, yet tedious task of spending a weekend with simple training.

Come and go from the house. Over and over and over again. Get your coats, belongings, etc, leave. Immediately return, and ignore your pup until he’s calm. Remove your coats, shoes, and set down your things. Play with him a bit when he’s calm and reassured. Get up to leave again, shoes, coat, belongings. Leave. Stay out for varying lengths of time. Ignore any barking, etc. Don’t scold, just ignore. Don’t alway stay out longer and longer, or the dog will realize that it’s getting worse and worse. Start by staying out just for seconds. In different incriments, eventually stay out for minutes at a time. Keep coming and going, coming and going. You’re dog will eventually learn that you come and go all the time, it’s no big deal, and you ARE coming back. I think you’ll find this to be very beneficial. It will be boring, and tedious, but if you really want him to be calm while you’re away, he needs to learn that you being away is okay, and you’re coming back to him.
