The Puggle Suckle
Allow me to introduce what I refer to as the “puggle suckle”.

Both of our puggles have been very good about only chewing on their designated toys (not on couches, shoes, etc.) but they both love to suck on things. Strange huh? I’m not really sure what possesses them to engage in this behavior but I have spoken to other puggle owners and some of their dogs do it as well .
I do my best to correct them when they have a large chunk of blanket in their mouths, but it’s just so cute. It’s not as though they’re damaging anything either. A little puggle slobber never hurt anyone.
I know you can’t really tell from the picture, but this is basically what Duke looks like when he is sucking on something. If anyone can explain this weird behavior I would love to get a better understanding.

Hey guys… Dyna does the same thing! Rob thinks it’s crazy and was starting to get a little worried about it. But it makes me feel better knowing Duke does the same thing. I thought Dyna was doing it becuase she is still pretty young. She has a particular toy that she loves, it’s like a stuffed bird and she will just suck on it’s beak forever. It’s so funny.
I just did a web search for suckling to find out if it is normal. The little puggle is so cute doing it. We have a one year old 75 pound Weimaraner who does it, too! Did you ever find out why??
We just got two puggle puppies and they like to suckle on things too. They suckle alot in their sleep. It is really cute. It must be something they do for comfort, is all I can figure.
I don’t know if this applies to dog, but it sounds like a good theory. We had a cat that did this and we were told it was because the cat was weaned too early. Again, we were told it was not harmful and that eventually the cat would grow out of it, or do it less often as it got older.
I have a new Puggle and don’t see any suckling, but I’ll be watching for it!
I have a dog I think is a puggle he looks alot like them.Sam does the same thing,he sucks on a fuzzy blanket every time he goes to sleep.Sam is six years old.I have a question though my Sam is darker brown than the dog Gracie is that common,his nose is a little shorter too.
@Laura,
The puggle pictured above is Duke and he is quite a bit lighter in color than most of the other puggles I have seen. Gracie on the other hand is darker and has the short pug nose like you are describing. She is a more “common” looking puggle.
My 12 week old english bulldog does it. I reseached it and I guess its commen with puppies who were weaned away early from their moms and bottle fed instead.
